LANE SHARING
Commuting on motorcycles within our public highways carries a risk that is substantially greater than that of a driver. Riding defensively while constantly staying alert is two of the most important aspects associated with the many necessary technical skills required to seriously master long term street survival. Our massive networks of roads are full of four and eighteen wheel machines that can easily crush a rider without any notice. Motorcycles should not be held to the same rules (during certain driving conditions) considering the obvious risks and dangers involved with operating them. There are many hazards for riders in addition to the common heedless driver who doesn’t automatically look for the small and obscure two wheeled anomaly. Braving the elements such as wind and rain, pot holes, northwest winter road gravel and heavily traveled oil stained lanes are just a few of the real world conditions all riders deal with on a daily basis. Northwest drivers should respectfully realize the inherent dangers involved due to these common obstacles they often take for granted. All drivers in general should always be courteous and politely allow unrestricted open lane sharing with the knowledge that motorcyclists bravely run these gauntlets continuously while discreetly reducing traffic congestion, smog, road repair, and significantly reducing the negative impact on our environment.
Lane Sharing substantially reduces the overall hazards that every motorcyclist clearly faces during heavy traffic flow patterns. It is important to remember that the probability of rear end collisions increase immensely due to the considerable braking capabilities that result in extremely shorter stopping distances. Quicker reaction times or longer following distances from larger and heavier vehicles are frequently required in repeated cycles of “stop and go” traffic behind any motorcycle. Being trapped and completely boxed in by typical irritated drivers that tend to inadvertently crowd in on a motorcycle (due to its small size) is simply a recipe for disaster. This is especially true when there is nothing protecting you externally and no exit available to avoid or escape a possible oncoming collision. This repetitious onslaught can fatigue a rider quickly from the many manipulating actions required to overcome the awkward instability that slow speed generates. Heat stroke and concentrated exhaust fumes are other factors that often compound these stressful circumstances which can further diminish even a seasoned rider’s operating capabilities.
Many modern V twin oil cooled engines that American made Harley Davidsons are well known for will quickly overheat and cause engine damage during these types of scenarios. These engines need constant air movement over the cylinder fins to maintain a safe operating temperature. This is a major safety concern along with expensive repairs owners face from being forced to sit alongside larger inefficient vehicles that conveniently have the luxury of thermostatically controlled cooling systems regulating drivetrain temperatures. Not allowing Lane Sharing is simply a ridiculous mentality. Our governor’s perception towards this particular mainstream highway law needs to be prudently addressed and directly modified for these two wheeled machines to function properly and operate more safely in heavy traffic environments. A motorcycle traveling no more than 10 miles an hour faster than the overall flow of traffic traveling below the posted speed limit will eliminate all of these risks completely and substantially reduce the extreme dangers that continue to put riders in harm’s way today.
The motorcycle community here in the Northwest is increasing at a rapid pace due to the weak economy, transportation costs, high traffic and diminished parking. Increasing population growth with limited expansion boundaries will only create longer rush hour traffic times and larger areas of limited parking within our cities. These escalating transportation conditions can only continue to make the old nonconformist two wheel stigmas vanish while the recognition and respect for Motorcycle Riders improves. Motorcycles and Bicycles are one of the primary forms of transportation in other cities around the world and we have already committed to giving greater liberties to bicyclists here in Portland. The State of Oregon needs to move forward and enhance its transportation laws to include motorcycles, like so many other states within our great nation have already done. This is an important common sense issue: Low Speed Lane Sharing for all motorcycles.
